Science detracts they say
but a mere
pinprick
of light, barely there
can inspire such awe
but science, they say.
Reduced to a glob
of gas
how can there be beauty
--majesty--
--mystery--
when the universe is explained into
(non-existence)
and the light of stars
is brought too near and becomes merely
that.
The stars
are a million light years too
far. Such distance
as cannot be conceived on
earth.
When time
adds up to infinity and hope
dies--
in the space among atoms
how can science
detract?
The mystery is half-solved
and so it is no more
The mystery
is guesswork
unconfirmed
unconfirmable
God
a mere fragment
as stars
are mere atoms
unobtainable
causing such pain to those
who know, to those who would
and cannot, to those, like me, who
would give a lifetime
of happiness
to travel
to
the stars
When the nearest
is
but four point something years away
light years.
And relativity confirms
the distance of the stars and knowledge
--science--
increases the desire but kills
the hope
why do poets claim science
detracts when
we have eyes
to see
and we have hearts
to feel
the earth
move
under our backs
rotating
no earthly reminders
in line of
sight
under the majesty--
earthbound
science is meaningless
and meaningless facts
knowledge
have no power to
destroy a thing of beauty
Nevertheless
when our eyes
with the knowledge
of the world hiding
behind them
when they look upon stars
--as poet's eyes look--
and remember the quest
to know
so that we may have in
mind
what Einstein, in his genius
denied
us hope of having in
actuality--
we cannot travel
among stars
Why would they deny us the right
of any living creature
to see, not
Mere globs of gas
but
the beauty
--majesty--
--mystery--
when night comes
do we see less--
or more?
